Celebrating Rosh Hashanah
Happy New Year! Shana Tova v’ Metukah!
September 25-27, 2022
Rosh HaShana is the Jewish New Year. The word Rosh means “head”, and HaShana means “the year”, so it is the “head of the year”. It occurs every year between early September and early October. The date is based on the Jewish Calendar, which is a 5782 year old lunar calendar. This is why the date is different each year. Jewish holidays begin at sundown the evening before the date listed on a Gregorian calendar.
Rosh HaShana is a festive holiday, filled with sweet treats. Foods like apples dipped in honey, and round challah with raisins are commonly eaten. Families and friends may gather together to share a meal and extend well wishes for the new year. Greetings such as “happy New Year!” or “Shana Tova v’ Metukah!” (a good and sweet year) are exchanged.
Rosh HaShana is also a holiday of reflection, as Jewish people take the opportunity to consider the year that has passed and the ways in which they could be better versions of themselves in the coming year. Jews may go to Synagogue services where they will hear the trumpeting tone of the Shofar (made from a ram’s horn).
Rosh HaShana is the first of the High Holidays, which end with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement and a very solemn Jewish holiday.
If you have thoughts or ideas to share, please reach out to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MIHS PTA school diversity@mihsptsa.org we would love to hear from you. We wish a very happy new year to all who are celebrating!

Mock SAT/ACT Tests
MIHS PTSA provides 6 testing opportunities as a chance to practice a real test, become familiar with a testing environment, and help identify which testing platform is best for each individual student. All this in a ‘Mock’ situation where tests are not recorded or submitted to any high school or college organization. This is a perfect chance to ‘try out’ these tests.
